Getting in shape + Epigenetics
The recent research about epigenetics has convinced me of the importance of getting in the best shape I can before I have kids. I used to be in pretty good shape (i.e., 11 hrs, 52 mins finishing time for the JFK 50 mile run), but 10+ years in the startup grinder and the inherent lack of balance in life has left me out of shape. So, I recently got a trainer (who's been kicking my butt 3 times a week) and I'm committed to making the time to get back into shape. It's also something that's important to our corporate culture as we grow. One example is ordering healthy food & fruit for the office.
It's also hard for me because I have a very unhealthy relationship with food. I eat quickly, which means I usually intake more calories than I need. It's also hard for me not to finish my plate, and it's especially hard not to eat food if it's in the house and it's something I'm craving (does anyone else have experiences where food 'talks to you'? If so, tell me about it in the comments!). Re-adjusting the relationship I have with food is something I'm working on, but it's not easy. Hence the epigenetics part: If I can get into better shape before I have kids, my hope is that my kids won't have to deal with issues like these over their lifespans.
